Due to the economic crisis, it is but understandable that you would want to be prudent on your spending as possible. Hence, even when a water-related disaster strikes, it is expected that you might want to avoid getting professional help if you can. Now, being prudent is one thing but being gung-ho is another… especially if you’re dealing with a problem that is as serious as water damage. The question therefore is, where do you draw the line? When is it still advisable to perform do-it-yourself water damage restoration and when is it necessary to avail of a professional water restoration service?

How doubt should be interpreted.

The moment you feel tentative about carrying out a restoration operation on your own, chances are you have every reason to be. Meaning, if your own initial assessment of the situation is telling you that the problem is too difficult for you to handle, do not proceed.

There’s usually more behind.

Perhaps the water level is just too high. Perhaps the wooden walls and ceilings just appear too swelly, as if they would burst out anytime. Perhaps the structure itself does not look stable enough. Perhaps the odor and sight of it all makes you feel that an impending danger is looming overhead.

The extent of water damage and the risks it poses is seldom obvious to the naked eye. On the contrary, its dangers lurk behind the walls, floors and ceilings. Thus, when the dangers become evident, then the severity can most likely be even greater than what is reflected, and only water restoration service by a qualified professional is the best option.

When you’re sure that there’s more behind

When somehow you become sure of the presence of water behind the walls, then it would definitely be advisable to contact experts who can carry out water restoration service. Breaking down the walls can be very time consuming, very risky, not to mention probably totally unnecessary. This is because many water restoration service companies are equipped with wall injection drying systems that can dry whatever is behind walls, floors and ceilings without having to remove them.

One reason why you wouldn’t want to break down the walls on your own is that the mere fact that they have reached that far might mean that the structure is extremely unstable. A little outside intervention might bring the house down. While this doesn’t have to be taken literally, it sure is still risky nevertheless.

Put importance to the essence of time.

In a disaster such as a flood, time is an important factor. The longer it would take you to deal with certain issues, the more serious they can get. Take the case of mold and mildew for example. If water stays in an area (especially if it was borne by floodwaters) for more than 48 hrs, chances of mold growth become practically 100%. The moment spores germinate, that’s when the problem begins. These little critters can easily go airborne, get inhaled and endanger your respiratory system. Some can be as fatal as causing death. Thus, the longer water stays, more risks are introduced. Besides, the moment molds are in full bloom, only water restoration service companies have the appropriate equipment to totally eradicate them.

In the end, the decision is yours but it is important to know the facts so that it will be easy for you to determine whether or not it is time to call any professional water restoration service.

Sewage damage cleanup is a vital part of post-flood cleanup procedure. In rush of salvaging our properties, we tend to ignore the sanitation and sewage damage cleanup aspects. This is the reason an epidemic follows each flood, irrespective of any geographical location. Naturally, while planning for rehabilitating the victims, provisions are made to save several lives.

Unattended sewage can house a number of health hazards. Old people and infants are the most common victims of these health hazards because either there resistance power is not upto the level where they can fight these microbial organisms or due to the respiratory problems that they suffer from. So, in post-flood phase, calling for professional sewage damage cleanup service providers becomes very essential.

In low lying areas, water clogging and water contamination is a very common problem. They need immediate cleanup because once they come in contact with drinking water there is not much you can do to restore the water. You will have to wait till the restoration technicians are called and till then you will have to sustain on packaged water.

There are certain points you need to remember when professional sewage damage cleanup team is working in your apartment. Since there are many health related apprehensions related to sewage damage cleanup, it is always advisable to assess the situation and then act accordingly. Following tips can guide you in such crisis situation:

1.Don’t step right away: Check before start working on it whether you can handle it yourself or you need professional assistance of some quality sewage damage cleanup team. And if you think you can manage the situation on your own, don’t forget to protect yourself with proper gears like gloves, socks and masks.

2.Maintain time: Once the situation is assessed try to work out everything as soon as possible. Longer your property would be exposed to blocked sewage, more damage would occur to the same. More time they will get more the germs would multiply enhancing the potential threat of health hazards like Hepatitis A. For the well being of you and your loved ones, start working on sewage damage cleanup.

3.Prioritise your needs: You will have to accept the fact that even the most efficient restoration service can not salvage all your property. You may have to part with some of your favorite possessions. Those materials which soak liquid, like carpet, mattresses, bedding materials etc should be disposed as contaminated sewage can house loads of diseases discussed before.

4.Seal the boundary: Seal the limit of blockage till sewage damage cleanup personnel’s reach. However, this would require customized equipment which you don’t usually have in your houses.

5.Healthy environment: Make sure while the cleaning up procedure is in process, the room is airy with properly ventilation. If you are stuck in a congested enclosure with disinfecting agents as well as debris and mold in air, you may suffocate.

There are a number of companies providing sewage damage cleanup service. Go through the feedback of their clients and then opt for the one which caters all your requirements.

Mold infestation can occur anywhere. Homes, commercial buildings, apartments homes and more are not exempt from mold infestation. Some places in the world have higher levels of humidity and these places can see a greater mold outbreak. Some of the leading bacteria that can break out in your home include mold, fungi and mildew. These basic bacteria are the most important ones to get rid of in your home because they can cause the most damage.

Homes can have a number of areas that encourage the growth of mold and mildew. Sinks, bathroom floors, walls, tubs, toilets and the air conditioning are all places in a building that will have higher rates of moisture. For this reason, it pays for homeowners to pay attention to these areas and look here regularly for mold outbreaks. Mold here is not only an irritation; it can be extremely harmful to your health. For this reason, mold removal is a crucial part of living in your home ownership.

Mold and mildew float through our homes, affecting our breathing. The toxins in mold and mildew will cause allergic reactions in almost everyone, but most especially affect those with respiratory illnesses. A person that is already sensitive to allergies and mold will really need a mold removal in their home to live more safely.

Some people will try to ignore the mold and work around it. Others still will be too lazy to cleaning it. Ignoring mold and not removing it can cause structural problems as well as health problems. Mold removal can help prevent structural damage in the future. If the mold eats at the house’s foundation long enough, the owner will have to shell out a lot of cash for future renovations.

There are some mold removal techniques that you can try in your own home to prevent the problems associated with mold and mildew. In addition to hiring someone, you can do some prevention work for your home that will help keep the mold and mildew to a minimum. Look online and research different mold removal techniques that can work with your home. You need to find ways that will keep your mold and mildew presence lower. You want a home that is 100% bacteria free.

One way to help prevent mold is to eliminate moisture. Keep your bathroom floors dry and fix any leaking faucets. Taking care of these seemingly small tasks can keep your mold removal needs to a minimum. Also, good mold removal and prevention will keep the presence of this bacterium down by using chlorine bleach and water. Just brushing the floor, walls and tile with this mixture can prevent mold spores from getting the oxygen it needs to grow. If you have mold potential in your mattress or rugs, brush the affected area with upholstery shampoo. Dry it off in the sun for a truly dry situation.

A simple cleaning is not enough of a mold removal process to keep everything at bay. You will want to look for air purifiers, mattress pads, HEPA vacuums or steam cleaners and more.

Water is the source and keeper of life but water itself causes severe damage of properties and lives. Flood damage is a major concern worldwide, which has increased after the global warming issue has set its foot. Frequency of floods is reported to have increased in rivers that are fed by snowmelt waters. It’s time to get reorganized in managing floods and its consequences. But for a systematic and effective management, a proper understanding of the calamity and its consequences is needed.

A river gets inflow of water from its upstream part. Broadly rivers can be classified into two types-snow fed and rainwater fed. When the water volume of a river exceeds its carrying capacity, river water spills out into adjacent banks. Spilling occurs in the form of gushing waves. Recession of this inundated water towards the river bed takes place at a slower pace and the rate of recession chiefly depends upon the slope of the banks. In most of the cases the problem of flood damage intensifies during this period.

Apart from all kinds of destruction caused by flood waves, prolonged water-logging condition hinders relief and rescue operations. Relief personnel face serious hazards in reaching remote places. Victims, who manage to find secure shelters, undergo severe food and safe drinking water crisis and death toll rises. Owners of agricultural and industrial properties have to face huge amount of losses. Even after water recedes, flood damage restoration becomes a long procedure involving huge sum of money. But loss of human lives can never be reinstated.

After the calamity, people are left with piles of damaged stuff, from carpets to concrete structures. The most difficult task is to clean up basements, both at residences and offices. After flood, wet articles easily catch mold growth and decay fast. Flood damage control professionals put hard efforts to dry things as fast as possible. Renovation of buildings cannot be started before inundated water recedes totally. And restoration of agricultural land becomes most challenging and long term process.

Flood damage has become a real hassle for insurance companies too. With increased frequency of floods for last few years, they are forced to pay lump sum to insurers. According to a report published by Insurance Information Institute of United States, in 2002, total national insurance payment for mold and water damage was $2.5 billion. Government authorities too have to spend millions in flood damage rehabilitation. As per a report published by Jamaican government, $165 million was allotted for post flood operations for the year 2004-’05.

Controlling flood damage is a key area of research for disaster management researchers. Deforestation and consequent increased rate of soil erosion cause increase in the level of river bed resulting in inundation. Sometimes mal-management of river dams and barrages too cause floods. Flood in cities often take place due to poor drainage system. so if measures are taken to reduce the possibilities of floods by creating mass awareness and reorganizing water management systems in both macro and micro levels, it would be the best way to check floods and flood damage.

One of the biggest problems that owners are faced with when it comes to flooding in homes and business establishments is water damage to carpets. Carpets, unlike furniture or appliances, cannot be moved as easily and dried conventionally out in the open. Standard drying, or hanging items to dry, may be applicable to rugs and smaller carpets, but not to large-sized or wall-to-wall carpeting. Carpets, particularly those using organic fibers, are known to attract molds when it has encountered water damage. The owner has no choice but to employ an effective damage restoration resource, which can be used to completely dry and restore a water-soaked carpet.

Probably the most effective water damage restoration resource for carpets is the sub-surface flood extractor. Flood extractors have specially designed suction plates that maximize channeling of water into the vacuum chamber. It is different from a standard wet-dry vacuum cleaner in the way they remove water from the surface. A wet-dry vacuum cleaner glides across the surface to be cleaned, while the flood extractor removes considerable amounts of water one section at a time.

Carpets that are soaked in water are not only wet on the surface, but even on the sub-surface and padding as well. The flood extractor is an ideal damage restoration resource for this application as it is capable of drawing water from the water-drenched carpet, its sub-surface and even up the pad and flooring.

The sub-surface flood extractor, as a damage restoration resource, can be used effectively even if the carpet is still soaked with standing water. Simply place the extractor at the middle of the room, or in an area where a larger concentration of the water is located. It can act as a pump to remove this standing water effectively.

To use the flood extractor as a water damage restoration resource, removal is performed in one direction first across all areas of the carpet. Usually, one pass is not enough to remove sub-surface waters completely. A second pass might be required and this can be done in an opposite direction perpendicular to the first pass. As mentioned earlier, flood extractors are used one section at a time. The vacuum is engaged for a pre-determined time. After this time, the vacuum is released and the pad is moved to another section. It is important to note that the sections should not overlap, as the flood extractor can remove water 5 inches or more away from the pad, depending on the length of time the vacuum is engaged.

Sub-surface extractors have one disadvantage though. As a damage restoration resource, it is effective in water removal for padded carpets or those with underlay. However, the extractor losses this effectiveness when used with carpets that have no underlying padding. For this purpose, a standard wet-dry vacuum cleaner can do the job with the same effectiveness.
After using the sub-surface extractor, some of the surface fibers might still be damp. This can be dried out by using wet-dry vacuum cleaners. It is important to note that a flood extractor alone, as a damage restoration resource, may not completely dry out a water-soaked carpet. It should be used with other restoration tools like vacuum cleaners, air movers and dehumidifiers.

One of the most devastating disasters that can occur to a home is flooding. Aside from the physical danger that raging waters can pose to trapped individuals in a flood, the resulting cleanup work could be very tiring, tedious and downright messy.

One of the most difficult areas that can get flooded in a home is the basement. Due to its strategic location in the house, typically below ground level, floodwaters would fill basements more easily than any other part of the house. In any case, water removal service should be performed immediately to avoid any complications that floodwaters could bring.

One of the most important aspects to consider when handling floodwaters is related to health. Aside from appearing unsanitary, the dark, murky and often foul-smelling waters of floods contain a variety of bacteria and microorganisms that can be harmful to the occupants of a home. If not removed and treated properly, these waters can cause certain diseases that can even put lives in danger in the extreme. Another consideration after an occurrence of floods is the possibility of mold and mildew infestations to the home’s structure and the materials in it. These items should be carefully considered when removing water from a flooded home and basement.

Water removal service for flooded basements is not as simple as quickly pumping out water from the area then waiting for it to dry on its own. The following are things to consider as preliminary steps when performing water removal service for a flooded basement.

*Structural Integrity

Checking the structural integrity of a flooded home is the first thing that should be done before entering the home to perform water removal service. Check first the outside of the house and nearby surroundings. Things to watch out for are downed power lines or gas leaks. Do not enter the house if you see some of this anomalies then report the situation immediately to authorities. If you think the structure is not good and is about to give in, you must forego entering the home and call professionals and experts to check the structure’s integrity.

Some basements are dug out from the ground when built. Others are built on a lower tier from the rest of the house but are still created with external walls that are below ground or road level. Before starting any water removal service activity for basements, ensure that the floodwaters have receded and no more water is pushing against the basement walls. Floods can exert tremendous pressure to the basement structure, pushing it inwards. On the other hand, floodwaters already inside the basement act as a ballast to counteract the pressure. If the flood is pumped out immediately when flooding outside has not yet fully receded, the walls could buckle in resulting to more structural damage.

*Electricity

Water and electricity do not combine well and could prove fatal to someone who gets electrocuted. It would be important to turn off electrical power from the basement before performing any restoration work. However, do not attempt to turn off the power through the electrical service panel when there is still standing water in the area. Turn power off from circuit breakers or fuse boxes by using a wooden stick or handle to switch off each individual breaker or the fuse box lever. For fuse boxes, it would be necessary to remove the fuses until water removal service has been completed.

*Fuel Lines

Another important thing to check before performing water removal service is to turn off all gas and fuel lines. Pipelines could have broken off during the flood and could cause leaks into the basement. Locate the inlet valves and turn them off. Most valves have a knob which you can rotate to close, while some have some sort of handle which you can swing to the “off” location. Some valves may be tight enough that you’ll need the use of a pipe wrench or pliers.
Basic steps should first be considered before performing any water damage restoration work for a flooded basement. These procedures could ensure the safety of individuals and prevent further risk and damage to the owners and inhabitants of a home.

Molds appear in places where water and moisture content is high. Mold stains are quite hard to remove, so the earlier it is cleaned out and removed, the better, because leaving it on a surface for quite sometime only allows the molds to grow in size and the stain to seep deeper. The stale smell that mold gives out is also quite annoying. On the first sign of mold presence, take steps to conduct mold removal right away.

It is important to also keep in mind that molds could cause sickness and respiratory allergies. Hence, removing them as soon as possible minimizes the hazards to your family’s health. Mold removal is quite a strenuous cleaning activity since it would require extra effort to brush the mold stains off and to dry the said surface thoroughly.

For mold removal procedure, the following are suggested:

* Before tackling the task of mold removal from your home, it is essential that proper working clothes are donned. Wear gloves, a face mask, work shirts that have long sleeves and long pants. Wear goggles too to prevent the airborne spores from getting into your eyes.

* Gather all needed cleaning equipment for mold removal like brushes, rags, pail of water (with water, detergent and any disinfecting/bleaching agent). You may also need another pail that contains clean water for rinsing.

* Brush the surface thoroughly with the soapy water mixed with bleaching agent. Rinse out thoroughly with water, then wipe dry with rags.

* Air dry the surface or furniture with a fan or better yet, if the area you just have cleaned is movable then carry it out and dry it under the sun.

* After having cleaned out visible molds, do a second check within the perimeter or are where you have seen the molds. Others could just be out of sight, so just check to be sure that mold removal is conducted in all areas where necessary.

* To avoid molds, fix leaking pipes or faucets. Seal cracks on walls and ceiling to prevent moisture from seeping in.

* If the weather is fine, open windows to let in fresh air and naturally dry out any moisture that has accumulated in the house or room during the time that windows are locked.

* If the house or room has an air ventilation system built on the ceiling, it would be a good idea to add one more to increase the airflow if windows and doors are not or cannot be opened.

* Should a household furniture or fixture like a sofa, desk, cabinet, and rugs get wet, make sure to clean and dry them immediately.

* When cleaning the house make sure to dry surfaces with clean rags to avoid moisture accumulation.

* Wash shower curtains regularly, including foot rugs that may be in the comfort rooms or shower rooms. Likewise, dry the tiles in the bathrooms after use as much as possible to avoid the growth of molds.

* If the surface is painted and has molds on it, scrape the molds off and clean the surface before repainting it. If the surface is wall papered, then remove the portion invaded by the molds and clean it thoroughly. Dry the surface well by using an air fan before replacing the wall paper.

* Seal cracks on the floors, walls and ceilings; this is usually where the moisture enters that initiates the growth of molds.

If you want to rob the fun out of what could have been a great day, all you have to do is mention three magic words: sewage damage cleanup. Nothing can be a more vomit-inducing and appetite-losing prospect than the thought of spending the day sifting through what you flush down the drain. But hey, it may be a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!

We all need to learn a few basics on sewage damage cleanup. Sewage damage seems to be more common these days, particularly if your house is old or your community sewage lines are not that well-maintained.

It’s great if the damage can be contained into a few feet of easy-to-scrub floors, but we’re usually not that blessed. Often, the sewage damage is intensive and affects many of our treasured furniture and stuff. The whole house can be flooded, making sewage damage cleanup cumbersome and complicated.

Unlike clean-up of flooding that resulted from a clean water line, sewage damage cleanup is like diving into a toxic dump. You have to assume that all the surfaces that the water touched needs to be disinfected, even if the water appear to be clear and without odor. Sewage water, after all, is the collection of our used washing water, laundry water and even excrement. And depending on what kind of sewage damage occurred, the disinfectant may need to be particularly strong.

Most things would be unsalvageable; as a rule if you can’t wash or boil it, throw it away. This is especially true of upholstery, stuffed toys, carpets and materials made of foam. And yes, of food, medicine, soap, cosmetics and anything you ingest or put in your body! Don’t get cheap and sentimental during sewage damage cleanup; you may be able to save some stuff today but think of the long-term costs of doing so.

Start sewage damage cleanup by protecting yourself. Wear rubber boots, rubber gloves, and goggles as you sift through the mess. Clear the area of all the flooding, you may use a mop or bucket for this that you must both throw away after use. Once the place has been dried, use a strong disinfectant and later maybe a deodorizer to clean the areas affected.

Sewage damage cleanup does not end after disinfection. Upon cleaning up the damage, you must conduct a thorough survey of your home to prevent complications. Air out damp areas and as much as you can, make sure they are dry and the house is well ventilated. Bacteria and molds can fester in damp and dirty areas and while you may have cleaned out the solid surfaces, the air can still be a cesspool of moisture and toxins. See what air disinfectants are available.

A word of caution: be extra careful of where you dispose the materials you wish to throw after a sewage damage cleanup. You may need to disinfect those too. If the sewage system has not yet been repaired, liquid waste may need to be treated. To be certain, call your local public health office. They would have some advice for you how and where to throw stuff collected after a sewage damage cleanup.

Wet carpet is nothing less than a disaster especially when the carpet is soaked in water. When we say wet carpet, it does not refer to few drops of juice spilled by the kids but we are seriously concerned about the carpet is swept the flood water. Flood water takes lots of things along with it and when it comes to costly and lovely carpet; it is a heart break for the house owner. A house that has been hit by the impish flood in the recent times would have dealt with wet carpets. It is an irritating sight to see soaked and soiled wet carpet piled up.

There are certain emergency actions that need to be taken to deal with wet carpet immediately after being carried by flood water. It is true that the first thing to do is to extract the water and dehumidify the wet carpet. But this does not mean increasing the temperature of the room with a heater and then vaporizing the water droplets from the wet carpet. This should never be done under any cost. Interestingly, the temperature should be made chill and not warm the house. Turn the air conditioner to the lowest mode and circulate chill air, this will do well to the wet carpet.

Under no circumstances the wet carpet should be allowed to sit just like that waiting it to dry on its own as this never happens and it only aggravates mold growth. So, the key is to act fast and do things to dry and clean the wet carpet. Things get worse if the carpet has padding. Padded carpets are expensive and replacing it with new carpet after the water damage is an unexpected expenditure. Most off the home insurance policies that are covered for water damage include carpet problems. Lucky are those who have insured it as the refund amount would become handy and reduce the financial burden.

Some of the home insurance companies consider has provision for cleaning carpet and so if you already have covered the house wit insurance then check with the company about their stand on wet carpets. It is better to be aware of your insurance policies before hand so that you don’t have to rush things and confuse the proceedings in the last minute. If you don’t remember if the policy covers wet carpet, then try to get information in that aspect.

You can further specific information by referring to the official website of the insurance companies. Incase you couldn’t locate the website or the company does not have one, you can contact them over phone and enquire about the required information. If you are fortunate, your insurance company will either take the responsibility to clean the carpet by delivering it to a professional carpet cleaning company or get you a brand new carpet.

On the other hand, if you don’t have insurance or the insurance company does not cover wet carpet, you have to either clean it for yourself or hire a cleaner on your own. It is suggested to choose a well established company to clean and dry the wet carpet as they would do it efficiently and skillfully in less time.
