Document Drying – Methods by Which Document Drying is Done

leave a comment »

Even though we are in an advanced era, where we rely heavily on electronic gadgetry, we have still not come out of the position, where we can do away without paper documents. Every business or legal meetings that take place have documentations done on paper as well as electronic pods. The loss of these highly confidential or legal documents, could be affecting adversely to the organization as well as the people indirectly involved with them. Any paper document whether it is books, journal or legal papers have their unique and grave commercial importance.

If the paper is damaged it might degrade quickly and thus should be taken up for document drying procedure. This method would surely stop the progress of the damage and allow us to understand the current condition the document is in, and act accordingly for its restoration, so that it may be as good as it were earlier or close to it. If we act upon the issue document drying quickly then the damage caused would be much less and would not require extreme measures to restore the original form back.

There are various steps to follow in document drying such as page separation, mold remediation and several others. The worst thing that can happen to a document is to get infected by molds, because they degrade the paper faster, and at times also break up the ink components and render the affected portion of the document useless. They can be taken care of through the process of remediation, where they are terminated for good. When the papers take in too much water, they tend to stick to one another giving the impression of being one; they have to be separated very carefully so as to not damage them in the process.

Various organizations are well equipped with instruments and techniques that can be used in document drying procedure. These organizations also boast of trained individuals, who specialize in document drying methods and can be relied whole heartedly. The professionals use deodorization and document drying techniques to swiftly restore the damaged books and documents.

It is to be noted that document may not be in just paper form but could be in the form of pictures and films also. These documents are often damaged due to damp and humid conditions, where the humidity sticks along with the material and damages its pixels. Even these things can be recovered with the help of document drying technologies in the advanced restoration factories. These documents are taken care of as soon as possible with definite recovery and document drying measures in different places and can be looked up to when in dire stress.

Thus, we should always keep in mind to put our documents in cool and dry places, where there would be fewer outbreaks of molds. Even the factor of humidity should be kept in mind, as it is the basic root of all troubles that lead to document damage. Whatever is the degree of water contact to the object, it should be immediately sent for document drying measures.

Do’s and Don’t’s of Water Damage Restoration

leave a comment »

It’s true that in many cases it’s a good idea to hire a company that deals with water damage restoration on a regular basis, but there are some things that you can do in the meantime to help speed up the process a little bit.  Here are some helpful hints about what to do and what not to do in order to in regards to water damage restoration.

First go through and get rid of the things that are just not salvageable.  This may be hard to do, but it’s necessary.  If you have a lot of books that have been soaked and you don’t want to get rid of them, take them somewhere where you can spread them out with the pages open so they can dry more quickly.  Another thing you can do to speed up water damage restoration is to take up any area rug that have been subjected to the water and hang them outside to dry.  Later when you have the time, take them to a laundry mat that has the big commercial washers and wash them there.

Furniture can also be moved outside, especially if you have a garage or a car port and can sit the furniture up on blocks or pieces of wood to allow the air to get in to where the furniture is most wet.  Next comes the carpeting.  Many times carpeting can be saved but you need to have a contractor who is experienced in taking up carpets come in and do the job because they will know how to do it without shrinking the rugs.

Something you should not do when working on water damage restoration is using a regular vacuum cleaner to take water out of carpets.  You will just ruin the sweeper and perhaps start an electrical fire by doing this.  Make sure to not use an electrical appliance while you are standing on a wet carpet.  This will place you at high risk for getting shocked.  If the electric in your house is still on, do not enter rooms where there is standing water.  Allow any electronics that have been under water to thoroughly dry out before trying to use them.  It’s also a good idea to have an electrician test them to see whether or not they are safe to operate.

Call a water damage restoration company as soon as possible because most of the time they can get there within hours to help with the cleanup.  The sooner you get them there the sooner things can get back to normal.  The cost of hiring a water damage restoration company varies due to the extent of the job that needs to be done and how long it takes to complete a job.  They can give you an estimate on how long the water damage restoration is going to take and a ball park figure on the costs.  Water damage restoration can be somewhat overwhelming at times, but with professionals and help from family and friends, it will not be quite as much of a nightmare.

Molds – Unhealthy and Unsafe

leave a comment »

The most important thing that person demands from his/her house is the clean status and presentable healthy environment. However, this wish is sometimes not fulfilled because of the unwanted intrusion by many of the small living beings and insects. This biggest example that comes in the mind of anyone are molds.

Molds are the funguses which are very tiny and hardy. They intrude in the most isolated and undesired places of your property and make the furniture and the complete infrastructure weak and tacky. There are many precautionary steps which are taken but getting rid of these bugs is sometimes very difficult or may be just impossible.

The other reason for concern in case of mold formation and development in the house is that it even creates health problems for many susceptible to allergic people as well as people who have a very weak immune system.

The major problem caused due to molds is the development of symptoms of asthma and eventually the disease if the molds get spread in uncontrollable amount in the house. There have been reports that in the last couple of decades the number of patients of asthma has increased in threefold and hence mold development and mold removal needs a good amount of thought.

The major reason why it is so difficult to prevent mold from getting the entry in your house is its nature and characteristics. They are very tiny and at the same time present everywhere whether the place where they have reached is within your reach or not and whether that place is visible to you or not.

The presence of mold can be found out from the musty and foul odor that it spreads around its area of existence. There are around fifty species of mold and few of them are very fatal to health, like black molds and even mildews. Stachybotrys is one of the species of mold which is most harmful in this regards and inhaling these molds can lead to many kinds of health and breathing problems in long term.

There are many kinds of test kits available in the market that will help you to find out if there is any kind of mold development or existence at your home. These kits are easily available and are greatly helpful in making you feel safe and secure from molds. The results after tests will show any presence of toxic mold immediately. It should be noted that these tests should be done where the suspicion of mold existence is highest.

However, the best possible way to get rid of mold is to get rid of all the moist materials and keep the environment free from dampening. As soon as the moisture or wet places are infiltrated with molds, it gets difficult to get rid of them as these mold reproduce at a rapid pace and are counted in billions and not even millions. Thus, it is better to be safe than sorry and keep yourself healthy rather being allergy prone to these bugs.

Humidity Control to Prevent Water Damage

leave a comment »

When your home or the objects inside it are subjected to water, either through a leak from any part of the house or through an external disaster such as flooding, the first thing you should do is to take steps to arrest the water or moisture in order to prevent further water damage. Inside the house, this is usually done by reducing the humidity level in the room. The higher the humidity, the more likely organisms such as mold and bacteria are likely to grow.

Even in the absence of disasters, excessive moisture can affect your home. Too much humidity can result in the growth of molds, affect the quality of indoor air, and cause allergic symptoms in your family members. It can also cause damage to your possessions.

There are three things that mold needs in order to grow: moisture, nutrients, and warm temperature. Mold experts say that the best way to arrest mold growth is through humidity control, which means controlling the moisture level in your home. In order to be able to do this, we have to understand how moisture enters our homes, and how we can control it.

How moisture enters homes

Moisture can come in as vapor through the air, or as a liquid, through any opening in the house – doors, windows, or cracks. Vapor is colorless so therefore you cannot see it or touch it until it turns to liquid.

Moisture can also be produced inside the house. When we breathe, we produce about 3 pints each day. Moisture is created whenever someone cooks, showers, washes the dishes, or does the laundry. Leaks in washing machine hoses, water heaters, and shower tile grout can also produce moisture.

How moisture is measured

Humidity increases when the amount of water vapor in the air increases, or when the air temperature drops. This means that the warmer the air is, the higher the humidity level. The colder the air is, the lower the humidity level.

Ideally, the humidity level inside a home should be from 30% to 50% to avoid water damage.

How to control humidity level

Unless the humidity level inside your home is effectively managed, water vapor may seep into your furnishings and cause water damage. You must find and eliminate the sources of the moisture, and dry up whatever has been wet.

Regularly check your washing machine hose, water heater, refrigerator, and the grout in your bathroom shower. If there is leaking in any of these, have them fixed by a plumber to avoid water damage.

Make sure your windows and doors fit properly in their frames. Do not forget to check the air conditioner frames too. You can easily notice if there is a leak on your door or window through water stains. If not detected and repaired immediately, leaks from these sources will cause water damage – the wood will rot. Change any caulking or weather-stripping that may be broken or missing.

Inspect your air conditioner to make sure that the filter is not clogged. Evaporator cooling coils should not be iced over, and water should not flow back into the room from the air conditioner condenser.

How to remove moisture buildup

After fixing any leaks, you will need to dry your house out. You can do this by heating the room, then cooling it. Turn on the heat to a high temperature setting, about 80°F, to draw the moisture out from your furnishings.

Then turn on the air conditioner to introduce cool air. Use a low setting, about 65°F, for about two or three hours before resetting the air conditioner to normal.

Repeat the heating then cooling process until you are sure that the moisture level is significantly reduced.

Proper maintenance and preventive care is necessary in order to avoid water damage. Floods are not the only cause of damage to houses and possessions; you may actually have water damage now if there are any leaks in your home. Save your home and save your health through proper humidity control measures.
